If you're new to scrapbooking you have noticed the vast range of scrapbooking supplies available. It can be overwhelming (not to mention costly!) knowing what to choose.
But don't get caught up in thinking you need to have everything to start your scrapbooking hobby. We've chosen our top 10 'must have' items that we think you will need in your kit to get started:
1. Card Stock (also called cover stock or pasteboard)
Your most basic scrapping requirement is high quality, acid-free card stock/cover stock. It comes in a range of sizes and can be purchased in multi-packs or as separate sheets. It is often cheaper to buy a bulk pack of colors you know you will use often than to buy it as a single piece each time.
2. Lighter Weight Patterned Paper
Patterned papers are lighter in weight than card stock and come in a huge range of colors. They are used for lettering, behind photos as a mat and as a feature on the card stock page.
3. Paper Trimmer (or Cutter)
A 12" paper trimmer is a tool many scrappers say they could not do without. They are a lot faster to use than scissors and also a lot more precise, producing clean, professional cuts.
4. Good Quality Scissors
No kit is complete without a pair of medium sized, great quality scissors. Buy a high quality pair and keep them away from the kids in case they disappear forever!
5. Adhesives/Glue etc
What you choose to use for adhesives is up to you and the page you are working on. You can choose from glue dots, double sided tape, photo stickers etc. Regardless of what you choose, it must be acid free and specifically labelled as suitable for scrapbooking.
6. Journaling/Writing Pens
Acid-free journal pens and markers are used to write on your pages. This is referred to as 'journaling'. Black is the most versatile pen when you're starting out then you can add more as your progress.
7. Stencils/Templates
Templates/Stencils are a guide for you trace your own letters, shapes etc. Either cut a shape out and paste onto the page or use a journaling pen to stencil directly on the scrapbook page.
8. Scrapbook Layouts/Sketches
Many beginner scrapbookers suffer from scrapper's block. A layout sketch is a plan for your page which you then 'fill in' as you wish. All scrapper's need inspiration and using sketches ensures scrapping never becomes a frustration.
9. Album(s)
Albums are where you store your finished pages. Most come in standard card stock sizes. As you get more advanced with your scrapping you may even want to make your own albums.
10. Page Protectors
These are used in completed albums. They help to protect your pages from dust and dirt. And stop photos from stick together. They might not be as glamorous as other supplies but they are very important.
You can go crazy with scrapbooking supplies but this list will give you a great start to begin with.
