Oh, kids these days. All they know are digital cameras, iPods, iPads, video games, mobile phones, and going online to check out the latest news on their favorite celebrities. It's very interesting to see how they are all so technologically savvy, but it's also a cause for concern how things have changed so rapidly over the course of a few years, and that it seems like kids aren't appreciating what it's like to be kids anymore, and also that they don't seem to be interested in anything that doesn't involve gadgetry and the Internet.
Take photographs and updates on their lives as an example. It's all online now for the whole world to see, and people can pick over the details that they want, and maybe even use it as a way to attack one another and what they all said. Not too many people are cautious about the pictures they post, the information they share, the meaning and impact of their updates, and who is seeing what it is they put online.
With that in mind, it might be a good idea for you to introduce your child to the wonders of scrapbooking. If you've done this in the past as a kid or a teenager, then you know exactly how to do it and how much fun it can be. Encourage your child to save tickets to carnivals, county fairs, or amusement parks, and even things like buttons and notes from friends. It may be too much to ask for photos to be printed, but if your kid is up for it, then put them in as well. Show him or her your own scrapbooks as well and let your child see what he or she can do with one.
Creating something handmade is sure to give your kid a thrill, and you can even show how the scrapbook itself can be made from scratch, without having to buy a bound book. You can have paper assembled and then put together using saddle stitch binding to make your scrapbook. Imagine the possibilities when designing the cover, too.
It may be a digital world nowadays, as evidenced by what is termed to be the death of print publications, but that doesn't mean that we should also stop making use of notebooks, journals, scrapbooks, and albums to keep our memories, special keepsakes, and other things of significance to us. It's a great nod to the past and a good way to exercise our creativity even further. Even you can keep your own journal, jotting down your thoughts either in a ready-made diary or creating your very own with a personalized cover and papers put together using plastic spiral binding.
